1999 Yamaha V-star 650 Classic

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

I wanted something clean but not a show bike. I didn’t have the money to drop 20k on a bike with all catalog accessories. I wanted to do all the work, my father in law and myself. I wanted to build something reliable and fun to ride.

What motivated you to start your project?

I’ve always loved the bobber style but wanted something fat. Wanted fat tires and a fat tank with ape hangers. Wanted something loud and fun to ride.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the bike?

The most creative thing we did was cut the front fender in half and used it as the back fender. Welded it right to the swingarm, used body filler to smooth it out and painted it.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud that we did all the work ourselves except mounting the tires. We did all the cutting, welding, painting, and powder coating. Also we kept the build rather inexpensive.

What do other people say about your motorcycle?

People really like the bike. Everybody ask what kind of bike it is and not many believe me when I say it’s a yamaha.
